Les courges, plus qu’une décoration d’automne !

Squash, more than just a fall decoration!

In the past, squash were essential plants once the cold season arrived. Grown in the fall, they were loved because they provide valuable nutrients that allow the body to generate heat in cold weather. We also loved them because we could keep them intact all winter.

Today, with the variety of foods available at any time of the year, we have somewhat lost the need to consume it so diligently. On the other hand, it is only our way of life that has changed. The squash hasn't changed!

To each its season

Squashes are divided into two categories. Summer squash, whose skin is thin and edible, and winter squash, harvested in the fall and having the advantage of being easy to store for several months, depending on the type. Here, we will talk about this second category!

A well-kept interior

Squash has much more to offer than just looks! It contains flesh which is full of vitamins and minerals. Its enthusiasts also benefit from its antioxidant and anti-carcinogenic properties, among others.

Don't throw away the seeds! They offer a whole other variety of health benefits, which will be discussed in another article!

Choose it wisely

When you choose it, if your intention is to keep it for a certain time, be careful to choose those which still have their stem and which have no bruises. If you consume it quickly, you don't have to be as careful! Also, keep in mind that generally the smaller it is, the less flavor it has and the heavier it is, the better it will taste.

Store it well

Preserving squash is relatively simple. If it is intact, place it in a cool, dry, dark, well-ventilated place. You can also cook it and freeze its flesh into small cubes or puree.

In the kitchen

In the kitchen, she is a true ally! It brings color and texture to your dishes, both savory and sweet. Baking it in the oven is the simplest way. This type of cooking concentrates its sugars and increases its flavors. You can also cook it in water, steam or in a pan. Cooking time varies depending on the size and type of squash.

In season, La Moisson offers you organic squash grown in Quebec. To pamper your taste buds, we have a varied choice including Butternut, Spaghetti, Acorn (peppered), Kabocha, Patidou and famous pumpkin.

Enjoy your food !
