The stimulant expectorants such as the loungers and the primrose help to liquefy the tenacious phlegm and to cause a productive cough to expel it. Relaxing expectorants such as licorice, thyme and plantain help prevent bronchospasm, release mucus and relieve dry cough, as well as to relax and open the airways to allow easier respiration. Nettle has astringent properties and is traditionally used to relieve seasonal allergies.
