Astaxanthin

Derived from Hawaii, Haematococcus Pluvalis, cultured under intact conditions, esterified astaxanthin is a stable, powerful and fat-soluble antioxidant of the carotenoid family. Research has shown that haematococcus algae produce astaxanthin to protect against free radical damage induced by ultraviolet. Astaxanthin is different from beta-carotene in that it comprises two additional oxygen groups on each of its cyclic structures, thus reinforcing its ability to eliminate free radicals. Astaxanthin has proven several hundred times more efficient than vitamin E to neutralize the singlet oxygen molecules and has demonstrated greater antioxidant activity than zeaxanthin and lutein. Astaxanthin protects the phospholipidic membranes from cells against oxidative damage. In a human clinical assessment, an supplementation in astaxanthin for two weeks has provided significant antioxidant protection of the skin.
