Curcumin is a substance derived from the turmeric plant (Curcuma longa), a spice commonly used in East Asian curry dishes. A large number of preclinical and clinical trials on humans have demonstrated curcumin's beneficial effects on health, notably its role as an antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and analgesic agent. Biochemical analysis has shown that curcumin is insoluble in water and gastrointestinal fluid, is rapidly metabolized and poorly absorbed by cells, has poor permeability of the blood-brain barrier and is rapidly eliminated from the body.
