L’avocat, or vert du Mexique

Avocado, green gold of Mexico

Once upon a time there was a lawyer

Avocado was first found in the diet of the Aztecs and Mayans of Mexico and possibly Guatemala around 10,000 years ago. But it was only in the 16th century that it became popular around the world, starting in Europe. At the beginning of the 20th century, Americans managed to push the limits of its popularity even though it was only consumed by the noblest peoples. Today, just about everyone has eaten the tender flesh of Mexican green gold.

Naturally generous

It is not for nothing that the Aztecs and Mayans consumed it. It is undoubtedly for its rich fat content that they preferred it. By consuming avocado, they benefited from the many benefits of different fatty acids, including the production of sustainable energy.

Additionally, avocado offers a wide variety of vitamins, minerals and fiber. It is also known to have great antioxidant power.

Environmental issues

Although avocado is so nutritious, it is best not to overdo it. The explosion of its popularity led to enthusiasm among producers. Producing more to meet demand is not necessarily the right solution. On the one hand, growing avocados is very water intensive. On the other hand, to make way for lucrative avocado trees, forests are being illegally razed. Result: the ecology of the region takes a hard hit.

Everyone's health is precious, including that of our environment. This is why you have to balance your plate. Too much of the same food, no matter which one, will cause harm both in consumption and cultivation.

Know how to find alternatives. Nuts, for example, are packed with antioxidants, good fats, fiber and other nutrients, just like avocado!

Choose it wisely and keep it

At the grocery store, choosing your avocado can be a little complex. Not being able to see his flesh, we trust his text by feeling him. Be careful, you must not crush it with your fingertips! Use your whole hand to feel the firmness of the flesh. Otherwise, you will end up with very unappetizing black bruises.

Store it at room temperature, away from other fruits and vegetables. The release of ethylene from its plant friends will cause it to ripen too quickly and you risk having very unpleasant surprises when you open it. Avoid temperature changes, they also darken the flesh.

On the plate

Several recipes are available to prepare your avocado in different ways. Have it with eggs, sliced tomatoes, sprouts and a few grains of salt for a ketogenic breakfast. Add it to your vegetable purees for an unusual texture. It has no equal when it comes to enhancing your smoothies. Of course, there is the very popular guacamole, a tasty Mexican dip. And why not also for dessert? Transform it into a decadent chocolate mousse.
