The name varech relates to several species of brown algae growing together on the coasts of the Northern Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, the North Sea and the Baltic Sea. Chronic iodine deficiencies can cause many health problems in children and adults, including a malfunction of the thyroid gland and different neurological, gastrointestinal and skin abnormalities. Such a deficiency in pregnant or breastfeeding women can cause neurocognitive deficits in their babies.
